Morrow pioneers the industrialization of safe, long-lasting, cobalt-free batteries

Morrow Batteries reveal one of their core technology tracks called LNMO-X. This unique combination of the cobalt-free LNMO with a new class of niobate anodes offers rapid charge, competitive energy density, superior safety, and excellent cycle life.

“Our technology has almost twice the energy density of the best performer in its class you can buy today – the NMC/LTO cell. By reducing the detrimental crosstalk observed in other LNMO cells, the pairing with a niobate anode solves one of the main challenges of the LNMO cathode that has prevented commercialization for two decades”, says Jon Fold von Bülow, Head of R&D at Morrow Batteries.

In contrast to other efforts on similar systems, the dedicated team at Morrow is exclusively working with water for all their slurries, avoiding the toxic and organic solvent NMP that is both environmentally unsustainable and energy-intensive to recycle in the manufacturing process. Through internal development, Morrow has successfully reached record performance of water-based electrodes, demonstrating an impressive cycle life of more than 4000 cycles to 80% capacity retention for the LNMO-X full cells.

“The niobate we use is cheaper than LTO and does not show the same gassing problem. These two properties are what will enable us to market the first commercial product with LNMO cathodes bringing us one step closer to our vision of producing the most sustainable batteries in the world. Moreover, the LNMO-X system offer superior safety, rapid charge, and exceptional low temperature performance, which will complement the rest of our product portfolio”, Jon continues.

Ultimately, a large prismatic LNMO-X cell boasting 125 Ah and more than 400 Wh/L capable of operating at -30°C will be mass produced in Morrow’s cell factory in Arendal, Norway. The applications for this technology where interest has been confirmed are electric ferries, trains, and automated guided vehicles (AGVs) where the LNMO-X batteries offer greater financial benefits in terms of total cost of ownership.

Morrow Batteries AS (“Morrow”) is on a mission to develop and deliver better batteries to the world at a lower cost to people and the environment. To decarbonize the transportation and energy sector, the industry needs low-cost and sustainable batteries. In face of the green energy transition, the Morrow strategy is twofold; delivering current technology products and developing next-generation batteries. These new batteries will feature the breakthrough cathode material (LNMO) - eliminating the need for cobalt and reducing the use of nickel and lithium, while maximizing the utilization of readily available and clean manganese. The industrial scale-up was founded in 2020. Headquartered in Arendal, Norway, it now counts 100+ battery specialists across four offices internationally.
